How We Compared Canadian Sports Betting Sites

Choosing between sports betting sites in Canada is harder than it looks. Most operators advertise similar odds, similar bonuses and similar lists of leagues, but the differences show up in how much of your stake comes back over time, how fast withdrawals arrive, and how well the platform works on a Tuesday night when you want to bet on a hockey game in the third period. This guide compares five well-known brands available to Canadian players: Stake, Sports Interaction, bet365, TonyBet and BetVictor. It focuses on the features and payout factors that actually affect your results.

We did not rank these bookmakers on marketing claims. Each operator was assessed against the same criteria, and we tested the parts that matter to a regular bettor rather than a first-time visitor who only sees the welcome page. Our process looked at six areas:

  • Pricing and payout rates: We compared odds on the same events across major leagues, including the NHL, NBA, NFL, MLB, Premier League soccer and tennis, then calculated the bookmaker margin built into each market.
  • Market depth: We checked how many markets are offered per game, including player props, alternative lines, period and quarter bets, and same-game parlay builders.
  • Banking: We looked at which payment methods are supported for deposits and withdrawals, the minimum and maximum limits, and typical processing times.
  • Promotions: We read the full terms of each welcome bonus and ongoing offer, not just the headline number.
  • Mobile and live betting: We tested the apps and mobile sites for speed, stability and ease of placing in-play wagers.
  • Licensing and support: We confirmed where each brand holds a licence, which provinces it serves, and how quickly customer support answers through live chat and email.

No single operator wins every category. A site with sharp odds may have a thin promotions calendar, while a brand with generous offers may take longer to pay out. The aim of this comparison is to help you understand those trade-offs so you can pick the platform that suits the way you bet. We also recommend opening accounts with more than one bookmaker. It is one of the simplest ways to improve long-term returns, because you can always take the best available price.

Terms, odds and licensing arrangements change frequently. Our figures reflect our latest round of testing, but you should always confirm current terms on the operator's own site before you deposit.

Side-by-Side Comparison: Features, Markets and Payouts

The table below summarises how the five brands compare on the features Canadian bettors ask about most. Payout ranges refer to the typical return-to-player figure we calculated on mainstream two-way and three-way markets. Niche markets and props usually carry a higher margin.

Operator Typical payout on major markets Standout features Main payment options Live streaming
Stake Approx. 95–97% Crypto-first banking, fast settlement, strong esports coverage Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, other cryptocurrencies, some fiat options Selected events
Sports Interaction Approx. 94–96% Canadian-built brand, strong NHL and CFL focus, CAD-native accounts Interac, Visa, Mastercard, iDebit, MuchBetter Limited
bet365 Approx. 94–96% Very deep in-play menu, Bet Builder, early payout offers, wide live streaming Interac, Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, bank transfer Extensive
TonyBet Approx. 94–96% Broad soccer and tennis coverage, bet builder, regular reload offers Interac, Visa, Mastercard, e-wallets Selected events
BetVictor Approx. 94–96% Strong soccer pricing, price boosts, clean interface Interac, Visa, Mastercard, bank transfer Selected events

The ranges above are approximate because margins move with the market. Odds are sharper on the night of a big game with heavy public action and often looser on lower-profile events or early lines. You should treat the table as a starting point. It does not guarantee the price you will get on a particular bet.

Market Depth and Bet Types

bet365 offered the greatest number of markets per event in our testing. This was most noticeable in live betting, where it frequently listed dozens of in-play options on a single NBA or NHL game. Its Bet Builder tool lets you combine several outcomes from one match into a single same-game parlay, and it is among the most flexible versions of that feature we have used.

Sports Interaction stands out for Canadian favourites. Its NHL and CFL menus include period betting, player points and goal scorer markets, and the site has long been built around a Canadian audience. TonyBet and BetVictor both perform especially well on soccer. They cover a wide variety of European leagues and lower divisions, and both offer bet builders on major matches. Stake has competitive coverage of the big North American leagues, but its real point of difference is esports and a fast, minimal interface.

Parlays, Props and Cash Out

All five operators support standard parlay bets, and each offers some form of cash out on eligible wagers. Cash out lets you settle a bet before the event finishes, either to lock in part of a profit or to cut a loss. Keep in mind that the cash-out value includes a margin for the bookmaker, so using it often will usually reduce your long-term returns. It works best as an occasional tool. Relying on it as a habit tends to cost you.

Player props are now standard at most sites. The depth varies, though. bet365 and Sports Interaction had the broadest prop menus for NHL and NBA games in our testing, while BetVictor and TonyBet were stronger on soccer player markets such as shots on target and anytime scorer.

Understanding Payout Percentages and Odds Margins

The payout percentage is one of the most important numbers in sports betting, and many bettors never check it. It tells you how much of the total money wagered on a market the bookmaker is expected to return to customers. Whatever is left over is the operator's margin, sometimes called the "vig" or "juice".

How to Calculate the Payout Rate Yourself

You can work out the payout on any market from the decimal odds. Take a simple two-way market, such as an NHL moneyline where both teams are priced at 1.91. The implied probability of each side is 1 divided by 1.91, which is about 52.36%. Add the two sides together and you get about 104.7%. The extra 4.7% above 100% is the overround. To find the payout percentage, divide 100 by 104.7, which gives roughly 95.5%.

Here is a second example with uneven odds. In a soccer match, the home team is 2.10, the draw is 3.40 and the away team is 3.60. The implied probabilities are about 47.6%, 29.4% and 27.8%, which add up to 104.8%. The payout is therefore about 95.4%. You can repeat this check in a few seconds for any market. Once you know how, it becomes a quick way to see which bookmakers price fairly.

Why a Few Percent Makes a Big Difference

A gap between a 94% and a 97% payout may look small on paper. Over a season, it adds up. Suppose you place 500 bets of $20 each, for $10,000 in total turnover. At a 94% payout, the expected cost of the margin is around $600. At 97%, it falls to around $300. The quality of your picks is the same in both cases. The only thing that changed was where you placed the bets.

That is why comparing odds across several sites is so valuable. If you hold accounts with three or four operators, you can check which one has the best price before every bet. Even a small edge, such as 1.95 instead of 1.91, meaningfully increases what you win when your picks come in.

Where Margins Are Highest

Across all five brands, the tightest margins were on high-volume markets such as NFL spreads, NBA totals and Premier League match results. The widest margins appeared on:

  • Futures and outright markets, such as Stanley Cup or Super Bowl winners, where the overround can exceed 20% or even 30%
  • Same-game parlays and bet builders, which typically carry a higher combined margin than singles
  • Exotic props and novelty markets
  • Lower-league and niche events with less liquidity

These markets can still be fun and worthwhile. Just know that the built-in cost is higher, and adjust your staking accordingly.

Deposit and Withdrawal Methods at Canadian Bookmakers

How quickly and reliably a site pays you matters as much as the odds it offers. A great price is not much use if your winnings take two weeks to arrive. The payment methods available at each operator differ, and so do the fees, limits and processing times.

Payment method Typical deposit time Typical withdrawal time Available at
Interac e-Transfer Instant 1–3 business days Sports Interaction, bet365, TonyBet, BetVictor
Visa / Mastercard debit and credit Instant 2–5 business days (where supported) Sports Interaction, bet365, TonyBet, BetVictor
iDebit / Instadebit Instant 1–3 business days Varies by operator
E-wallets (PayPal, MuchBetter and others) Instant Within 24 hours to 2 days Varies by operator
Cryptocurrency Minutes, depending on network Minutes to a few hours Stake
Bank transfer 1–3 business days 3–5 business days bet365, BetVictor and others

Interac: The Canadian Standard

For most Canadian players, Interac e-Transfer is the most convenient option. It draws directly from your bank account, deposits are usually instant, and withdrawals tend to land within a few business days. Sports Interaction, bet365, TonyBet and BetVictor all support Interac. It is a secure choice that avoids the credit card declines some banks apply to gambling transactions.

Visa and Mastercard

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted for deposits. Some Canadian banks block gambling transactions on credit cards, however, and some issuers treat them as cash advances with fees and interest. Debit versions of Visa and Mastercard tend to work more smoothly. Not every card can receive withdrawals. If yours can't, the operator will usually ask you to withdraw through Interac or bank transfer instead.

Crypto Banking at Stake

Stake is built around cryptocurrency. Deposits and withdrawals in Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and other coins are typically processed very quickly, often within minutes once the blockchain confirms the transaction. The trade-off is price volatility. The value of your balance can move with the crypto market, and converting back to Canadian dollars may involve exchange fees. Crypto withdrawals are fast, but you need to be comfortable managing a wallet.

Tips for Faster Withdrawals

  • Complete identity verification (KYC) as soon as you open an account. Unverified accounts are the most common cause of delayed payouts.
  • Withdraw using the same method you used to deposit, where possible. Many operators require this for anti-money-laundering reasons.
  • Make sure the name on your payment method matches the name on your betting account.
  • Check whether any bonus funds are still subject to wagering requirements, as these can block or reduce a withdrawal.
  • Avoid requesting withdrawals over weekends or holidays if speed matters, since bank processing slows down.

Welcome Offers and Ongoing Promotions

Every operator in this comparison uses promotions to attract new customers. A welcome bonus can add real value, but the headline figure rarely tells the full story. The terms attached to an offer decide how much it is actually worth.

Common Types of Welcome Bonus

  • Deposit match: The bookmaker matches a percentage of your first deposit in bonus funds, up to a maximum. These usually come with wagering requirements before you can withdraw.
  • Bet credits: You place a qualifying bet and receive bet credits in return. Winnings from bet credits normally exclude the stake itself.
  • Second-chance bet: If your first bet loses, you get a refund in bonus funds up to a set amount.
  • Odds boosts: Enhanced prices on selected markets, often for new customers.

In some provinces, especially Ontario, regulations restrict how operators can advertise inducements and bonuses to the public. As a result, some offers are only visible once you are logged in or have registered. Specific promotions also vary by province and change regularly, so we recommend checking each operator's promotions page for current details. You can explore available offers through our partner link.

How to Read Bonus Terms

Before claiming any offer, check these points:

  1. Wagering requirement: How many times must you bet the bonus (and sometimes the deposit) before withdrawal? Lower is better.
  2. Minimum odds: Many offers only count bets at odds of 1.50, 1.80 or higher toward the requirement.
  3. Time limit: Bonus funds often expire within 7 to 30 days.
  4. Eligible markets: Some bets, such as those settled by cash out, may not count.
  5. Maximum win: A few offers cap the amount you can win from bonus funds.

A smaller offer with fair terms is often worth more than a large one with a 10x rollover and a tight deadline. Take a moment to do the maths before you opt in.

Ongoing Promotions

Welcome offers are a one-time benefit. Ongoing promotions shape the value you get over months of use. bet365 is known for early payout offers on certain soccer and North American sports markets, where a bet may be settled as a winner if your team builds a set lead. BetVictor and TonyBet run regular price boosts and parlay-related promotions. Sports Interaction offers odds boosts and promotions around major Canadian events, such as the NHL playoffs. Stake runs frequent promotions and a VIP-style rewards structure for regular players. These recurring offers can matter more to an active bettor than any sign-up deal.

Legal Sports Betting Across Canadian Provinces

The legal landscape for sports betting in Canada changed significantly in August 2021, when Bill C-218 amended the Criminal Code to permit single-event wagers. Before that change, provincial lottery corporations could only offer parlay-style bets. Since then, each province has been responsible for deciding how to regulate the market within its own borders.

Ontario's Regulated Market

Ontario launched a fully regulated, open market in April 2022. Private operators that meet the requirements of iGaming Ontario and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) can offer their services legally to Ontario residents. bet365, Sports Interaction, TonyBet and BetVictor have all operated under this framework. Stake is not currently available to players in Ontario, so residents there should look to Ontario-licensed brands. As always, confirm an operator's current licensing status before you register, as arrangements can change.

Other Provinces

Outside Ontario, most provinces operate their own government-run platforms:

  • British Columbia and Manitoba: PlayNow, run by the BC Lottery Corporation
  • Quebec: Mise-o-jeu through Loto-Québec
  • Alberta: PlayAlberta, with the province moving toward a regulated private market
  • Saskatchewan: PlayNow via a partnership arrangement
  • Atlantic Canada: Proline and related products through the Atlantic Lottery Corporation

In these provinces, many residents also use internationally licensed operators. The legal position of those sites is a grey area. They are generally not licensed by the province, but Canadian authorities have historically focused enforcement on operators rather than individual bettors. It isn't treated as illegal for a person to place a bet on an offshore site in most cases. However, you give up some of the protections a provincially regulated platform offers. Choose operators with a reputable licence, such as from the Kahnawake Gaming Commission, the Malta Gaming Authority or a similar regulator.

Age Requirements

The legal age for wagering is 19 in most provinces. It is 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. Every legitimate operator will verify your age and identity before allowing withdrawals.

Taxes on Winnings

For recreational bettors in Canada, gambling winnings are generally not taxable, because they are treated as windfalls rather than income. The exception is for people who bet as a business, where the Canada Revenue Agency may treat profits as taxable income. If you are unsure about your situation, speak to a tax professional.

Betting Apps, Live Betting and Customer Support

Most wagers today are placed on a phone, often during the game itself. The quality of an operator's apps and live-betting tools therefore has a direct effect on your experience and, in some cases, your returns. A slow app that fails to confirm a bet before the odds change can cost you a good price.

Mobile App Performance

bet365 had the most polished mobile experience in our testing. Its app loads markets quickly, handles live streaming smoothly and makes the Bet Builder easy to use on a small screen. Sports Interaction has a clean, reliable app with sensible navigation for NHL and other North American leagues. TonyBet and BetVictor both offer capable apps with straightforward bet slips and quick access to boosts. Stake runs primarily through a fast, responsive mobile site rather than a traditional downloadable app, which works well on most modern phones.

When comparing apps, pay attention to:

  • How quickly bets are accepted during live play
  • Whether the app supports Face ID or fingerprint login
  • Push notifications for bet settlement and odds changes
  • Ease of managing deposits, withdrawals and responsible gambling limits from within the app

Live Betting and Streaming

Live betting now makes up a large share of activity at most sites. bet365 is the clear leader here, with a very deep in-play menu and a large live streaming library covering soccer, tennis, basketball and more. You generally need a funded account or a recent bet to watch streams. The other operators stream selected events, though coverage is narrower.

In-play margins tend to be wider than pre-match margins, because the bookmaker takes on more risk while prices move quickly. Live betting can be exciting, but it also encourages fast, impulsive decisions. Set a clear budget before you start.

Customer Support Quality

We contacted each operator's support team with the same set of questions about withdrawals, bonus terms and account verification. Live chat was the fastest channel across the board. Most operators connected us to an agent within a few minutes. bet365 and Sports Interaction gave the most detailed and accurate answers in our tests. Stake's support was quick and available around the clock. TonyBet and BetVictor responded promptly through chat and followed up clearly by email on more complex queries. Every interaction was professional, although response times were slower during major events, such as NFL Sundays.

Betting Responsibly

Good sports betting habits start with treating it as entertainment, not a way to make money. Every operator in this comparison offers tools to help you bet responsibly:

  • Deposit limits (daily, weekly or monthly)
  • Loss and wager limits
  • Session time reminders
  • Cool-off periods and self-exclusion
  • Reality checks and activity statements

Set limits before you place your first bet, not after a losing streak. Never chase losses, and never bet money you need for essentials. If betting stops feeling like fun, support is available through ConnexOntario (1-866-531-2600), the Responsible Gambling Council, and provincial helplines across Canada. Make sure you know where to find these tools on your chosen platform before you need them.

Choosing the Right Site for You

The best choice depends on how you bet. Here is a quick summary based on our findings:

  • For live betting and streaming: bet365
  • For a Canadian-focused experience and NHL markets: Sports Interaction
  • For crypto users who want fast payouts: Stake (where available)
  • For soccer and European markets: BetVictor and TonyBet
  • For regular promotions and boosts: TonyBet and BetVictor

Many experienced bettors hold accounts with two or three of these brands so they can shop for the best price on every bet. Ready to compare current offers? Visit our recommended sportsbook link to get started, and remember to check each site's latest terms before you deposit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Since August 2021, single-event wagers have been legal under federal law, and each province regulates the market within its borders. Ontario has an open, regulated market with licensed private operators. Other provinces mainly offer government-run platforms such as PlayNow, Mise-o-jeu and PlayAlberta. Many Canadians outside Ontario also use internationally licensed sites. Check the licensing status of any operator before you sign up.

Payout rates vary by market and change over time, so no single site is always best. In our testing, all five brands returned roughly 94–97% on major markets, with Stake often at the higher end on popular events. The most reliable way to maximise returns is to compare odds across several bookmakers before each bet and take the best price available.

Cryptocurrency withdrawals at Stake are typically the fastest, often arriving within minutes to a few hours. For Canadian dollar accounts, e-wallets and Interac e-Transfer are usually the quickest options, generally taking between 24 hours and three business days. Completing identity verification early is the best way to avoid delays with any method.

Yes. Sports Interaction, bet365, TonyBet and BetVictor all accept Visa and Mastercard deposits. Some Canadian banks block gambling transactions on credit cards, and some treat them as cash advances with extra fees. Debit cards often work more smoothly. Not all cards support withdrawals, so you may need to cash out through Interac or bank transfer instead.

For most recreational bettors, no. Winnings are generally treated as windfalls rather than taxable income. The exception applies to people who bet as a business or professional activity, where the Canada Revenue Agency may treat profits as income. If you bet heavily or systematically, consult a tax professional about your situation.

Read the full terms, not just the headline amount. Check the wagering requirement, the minimum odds for qualifying bets, the time limit, and any cap on winnings. A modest bonus with a low rollover and a reasonable deadline is often worth more than a large offer with strict conditions. If the terms don't suit your betting style, it is fine to skip the offer entirely.
